Launch: Mini-docs.

Other

Today, I’m launching a mini-documentary project loosely titled “Persons, Places & Passions” celebrating people Sheffield, past or present and the surrounding areas. Allow me to introduce the first film: It’s 7am on this cold December morning and Ben Cherry is waiting for the sun to rise so he can photograph the famous Curbar edge, in the Peak District. I stand back and observe him as he works. This is my quiet portrait of him as he explores that which he holds dearest; photography and nature and the tools with which he does so. There’s no message or moral to this…Keep reading >>

On, on a roll.

Other

On a roll is a project I cooked up when I did a quick photoshoot last year on a single roll of film. I was inspired by how much more I could get out of 24 / 36 shots taken on a roll of film than on a memory card in my digital camera. I shoot less and, I think, I shoot better. I’m not going to launch an enquiry into why; Do I think more because there a fewer shots available? Does the look of film simply suit my taste more, leading me to think it somehow better than…Keep reading >>

10 steps to making your own office.

Other

Step 1 Make a friend who has a room spare in a shop on a street in a prime location. In this case, The Alternative Store on Division Street, Sheffield. Thanks folks!   Step 2 Offer them something in return for the spare room they never use, such as, cleaning out said room they never use.  Step 3 Box up all the old stock, ready to go to the warehouse and free up space. Step 4 (optional) Go abroad, leaving your co-collaborator to do all the hard work of actually clearing up and taking boxes to the warehouse. Step 5 Hide your delight at…Keep reading >>

Interning at Warp Films

Other

I’ve been making little films for the past 4 years but I know that the scale of the films I want to make is far bigger than what I’ve done thus far and, to do that, I want to work on teams that put those films out there. Films, for me, are those things we queue up and pay to see, desperately avoiding the glance at the overpriced confectionary as we make our way into massive rooms full of people all delightedly sharing a cultural filmic experience together. I’ve been lucky enough to have had some public screenings of my…Keep reading >>

Making a Brass Band Documentary Pt. I: The Walk

Other

Making a Brass Band documentary Pt. I: The Walk “Do you want to make a documentary about a brass band composition?” “Uhhhm…Tell me more.”  She did. And I agreed. That’s the ultranonspecific way that I got involved with this project. With a skeptical hesitance which was quickly overturned by the delightful enthusiasm and amazing track record of Louise Snape, the professional puller off-er of Sheffield based arts platform ‘Hand Of’. She caught me at a good time because I was looking for a distinctly local project to turn my attention to. After making two snowboard films in my first two years…Keep reading >>

Hantu Shoot

Other

The idea behind this shoot for Hantu was to do an anti fashion shoot, fashion shoot. We ditched the typical angsty stares and furrowed brows for genuine laughter and enjoyment. All of that topped off with minimal, low contrast editing for some fun, unpretentious photographs. Here are some photos from the shoot, including a couple of behind the scenes photos and the crew credits.  Clothing: Hantu | Make up: Coco Bean | Styling: Faisal Bajwa | Models: Izaac George Cruickshank & Freya Sheldon | Video: Jessy Busgeeth | Location: Archipelago Works – – – Behind the scenes.  For more, higher resolution photos from…Keep reading >>

Fashion Shoot: The Alternative Store

Other

It’s been almost 2 years since I last shot any fashion. A combination of lack of opportunities for it a lack of self confidence in this area to actively go looking for it. As a filmmaker, photography has always played second fiddle so I’ve never committed to photographing anything that requires too much planning because, to me, that’s what filmmaking is. Photography is the fun stuff, and that’s why my photos are very photojournalism-esque with people & places already there. I turn up as the final element to capture what’s on offer and that’s that. But I’m the first to…Keep reading >>

Back & Alive

Other

Just a quick post to let y’all know I’m alive. Haven’t blogged because of a combination of travelling and the start of my final year at University. So here’s a few highlights of what I’ve been doing and from here on in, I’ll blog each event, just like I used to. Did I ever do that? Dunno, but I will.  USA | August – September. I’ve always been fascinated by the States but had never been. So this summer I worked my nuts off, saved up and splurged it all on a month of frolics. Went to NY, then hired a…Keep reading >>
